Through the healing of an instructor at the Art Institute...
Through the healing of an instructor at the Art Institute of Chicago I first learned of Christian Science. This healing was so wonderful to me that I asked many questions about Christian Science, and was led to get the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, from the Chicago Public Library. Oh, the joy and the blessing of that first reading, and the subsequent study of the Bible in the light of the writings of Mary Baker Eddy! I was hungry for the truth. A long cherished, speechless prayer for a God not afar off, but at hand, had been heard of our Father, and the answer was found in Christian Science. Although I was not seeking physical healing especially, frequent colds became less frequent as the fear of them was destroyed. Freedom from the fetters of materia medica came as an immeasurable blessing; for I had been somewhat frail, and therefore my health had been anxiously watched by members of the family. Simple statements from Science and Health became angels of His presence—healing, strengthening, and purifying.
One healing in my experience was a severe case of diphtheria, which was overcome in three days' time. On the third day there came to me thoughts about the Scriptural account of Jesus as he went about teaching the truth about God and speaking with authority; how he called his disciples together and "gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases." I pondered how it is that Christ, Truth, gives authority—dominion—over all that is unlike good; and as this realization of truth unfolded to my consciousness, the healing came. I am grateful for the light which Christian Science brings to the study of the Bible.
It is with a deep feeling of love and gratitude that I remember the good received from others, each step along the way. I am more grateful than I can say for the consecrated life and work of the one who brought to this age the revelation of Christian Science, and has thereby made the Christ-teaching available for every human need.
