Christian Scientists accept the teaching of the Bible...
Rugby Advertiser
Christian Scientists accept the teaching of the Bible without reservation. The first tenet of Christian Science, which is found in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 497), is as follows: "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life." The clergyman urges the study of the Scriptures. He says, "Believe the Bible." Christian Science points out the necessity of adding understanding to such belief, so that the works accomplished by Jesus, Paul, and the early Christians may be repeated by the Christian of to-day. There is a far greater test than either the mere approval or disapproval of an individual awaiting all teaching that claims to be one with the teaching of the gospel,—namely, its fruits. Christian Science is healing the sick and the sinning, alleviating suffering throughout the world; and thus affording the proofs demanded by primitive Christianity.
The clergyman's statement that Christian Science teaches that "God is an impersonal being" is incorrect. It is contrary to the teaching of Christian Science, which declares there is only one God, one infinite Person, who is correctly defined as infinite Being, and this correlates with the Scriptural title of God as "I am."
The remaining statements are without meaning, having been torn from the context. To illustrate, take the statement, "Mind is God." The Mind here referred to is the Mind of Christ, or the divine intelligence that actuated Jesus, giving him dominion over sin, sickness, and death. Paul, who himself possessed a demonstrable knowledge of Jesus' teaching, said, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus," that the works recorded in the gospel might be repeated throughout the ages.
