May I correct the erroneous impression given out in the sermon of an evangelist reported in a recent issue of your paper, that the teaching of Christian Science in regard to salvation differs from Bible teaching on this point.

The evangelist states that "Christian Scientists would save the world by simply having 'men be good' whether they believe in anything in particular or not." A reasonable and logical way to find out what Christian Science teaches in regard to how man is saved would be to refer to what Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has said on that subject in her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." On page 497 of that book the fourth religious tenet of Christian Science is found, which reads: "We acknowledge Jesus' atonement as the evidence of divine, efficacious Love, unfolding man's unity with God through Christ Jesus the Way-shower; and we acknowledge that man is saved through Christ, through Truth, Life, and Love as demonstrated by the Galilean Prophet in healing the sick and overcoming sin and death."

Jesus told us, "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." Christian Science teaches that goodness which does not proceed from an understanding of God and Christ Jesus is variable, for it lacks a sure foundation and is unable to stand the test of adversity; but goodness, the fruit of spiritual understanding, is permanent and most desirable.
