Our little daughter was not considered eligible to enter...
Our little daughter was not considered eligible to enter the Chicago public schools because of physical inability. The physicians said she would not be able to learn if she should go to school. The head doctor for the Board of Education said she was afflicted with epilepsy. After trying many doctors, without benefit, Christian Science was brought to our attention.
About this time we moved to Kansas City, where we began to attend the Christian Science church and placed our little daughter in the Sunday school. We then placed her under treatment and started her to the public school at the age of eight and one half years. The Christian Science practitioner we selected had been a school-teacher and she taught her to read by teaching her to repeat the "scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468) and other passages from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and then showing her where to find them in the book and helping her read them. After one summer of this work she was able to read the Quarterly Bible Lessons from both the Bible and Science and Health so fluently, and explain them so clearly, that neighbors and friends often remarked how wonderfully she did it. She finished the ward school at the age of thirteen and has always stood near the head of her classes. She was only kept in the second grade two months and skipped Fourth B entirely. She is considered a talented musician and plays in public recitals, and at present is a student in junior high school.
Some years ago she attended a school picnic and the next morning she was to get up. She lapsed into unconsciousness and for about forty-eight hours we were unable to arouse her. She seemed about to pass on and a physician was called to sign the necessary certificate, according to the human law. He said she was suffering with ptomaine poison. The mother stood on one side of her bed and the practitioner on the other voicing aloud the truth and calling to her to say it too. After some time she said the word "Spirit" and we kept working with her until she repeated the entire scientific statement with us. During all this experience these passages from the ninety-third psalm never left me, no matter what I was doing: "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty," and, "He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways." Whenever I picked up the books to read, these words would come to me and whatever I would read, these words would be in my mind all the time. The physician was called early in the morning and that same day she was sufficiently restored to eat fresh tomatoes, strawberries, milk, and ice cream. The practitioner had said to give her anything she wanted to eat and I obeyed and kept saying, "Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat," as the Scripture says. She has been thoroughly healed of the epilepsy and for several years has been a healthy, normal child in every way.
