I have long felt that I should like to express my gratitude...

I have long felt that I should like to express my gratitude through the Journal or Sentinel for some of the blessings that have come into my life through Christian Science. Before hearing of Christian Science, I had been suffering for six years from tubercular disease. I grew weaker every year and eventually became confined to bed with hip disease. After lying a year in a hospital, I was removed to my home, where I spent another year in bed with so little improvement that I felt greatly discouraged. I could not move in bed without pain. Then came the good news of Christian Science healing. My cousin, home on a holiday, brought some Christian Science literature, given to her by her employer, a Christian Scientist.

I read in an article in one of the Journals that God is omnipresent good,—"closer is he than breathing, and nearer than hands and feet,"—and shall never forget the sense of peace that came to me while reading. I did not understand all I read, but to one in the deepest despair it seemed so comforting to feel that God does not send sickness. I had never before heard of Christian Science. My cousin was not interested, but she loaned me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. This was in July, 1908. Later I got the book for myself and felt so grateful for its beautiful teaching. I read, searched, and prayed for humility, to ask in the Christ-way as the Christian Scientists were doing, and not to ask amiss, that I might be healed.

I wrote to a practitioner for treatment, which was kindly given, and some weeks later, while reading page 347 of Science and Health, my thought was illumined by a ray of spiritual reality. It came so peacefully, a "still small voice." I have often felt grateful for this experience, this demonstration of the law of God. It seemed to sweep away the darkness of fear and sadness, and I knew that I was being healed. I worked on for nearly a year without feeling very much helped physically, but I was undergoing a great mental change. Then one day while reading the book I was instantaneously healed of the pain in the hip. Still some time elapsed before I was able to get out of bed without assistance. But after this healing I steadily gained in health and strength till I could walk without crutches; and soon afterward was able to undertake a two days' journey by sea, traveling alone, to meet some Christian Scientists.
