I had heard of Christian Science very often through my husband's brother, but felt very antagonistic toward its teachings, although I had no just cause. Several months before the birth of our last child, which is now more than ten years ago, I suffered with severe stomach trouble and nausea. The family doctor was called in, but he stated that he could do very little for me in my condition, and in time this trouble would disappear. I had not eaten in eleven days, and could not retain even a drink of water. It was then that I was asked if I did not care to try Christian Science; and I agreed, as to mortal sense I was surely in need of help. A kind practitioner was called; and in one treatment I was completely healed of that trouble. A few minutes after the practitioner left me I ate a hearty meal; and I had no more trouble after that.
All my resentment and antagonism had disappeared with the illness, and I was surely grateful for having found Christian Science. Since then our children have been healed of many sicknesses, such as measles, sore throat, whooping cough, sprains, influenza, and many others. The attack of measles was overcome in two treatments; the following day there was not a spot left to be seen on the body. Also whooping cough was overcome in a few treatments.
Each day unfolds to us more of God's goodness, in the protection that is afforded us. I find if I start the day aright by knowing the truth about man and his relation to God, that whatever error seems to appear, we have our protection at hand. Not long ago, while out driving in our car, I had to cross a railroad track. This particular crossing has always been considered rather a dangerous one for automobiles, as trains come from every direction at that point. I had slowed up and let one train by, looked right and left and seeing no flagman out, started across; and just as the front wheels reached the track, a large object loomed up beside me. A "still small voice" whispered to me then, "You must turn quickly." I swung the wheel around as quickly as possible, but the train caught the rear fender, tore off the running board, and gave the car a good jolt. I was knocked over on my side, still holding the wheel and with my foot on the brake. I was not hurt in any way,—not even a scratch to be seen. My first thought was of gratitude for the wonderful protection I had experienced. I was able to drive the car home, and experienced no bad after effects.
