The Lectures

The Apostle Peter tells us that we should always be ready to answer every man who asketh for a reason of the hope that is in us. This present occasion affords me a joyous opportunity to give you a reason for my hope in Christian Science. I am reminded that exactly seventeen years ago to-day, according to the evidence of the medical profession, my wife was just lingering upon the brink of the grave. It was a case that for many years had baffled the skill and resources of that profession, including surgery; and when the last spark of hope had gone, and the doctors had all declared that nothing more could be done for her, a messenger came to tell us of Christian Science. A Christian Science practitioner was sent for; and although at this time my wife was not able to raise her head from the pillow, yet within twenty-four hours, and when alone, she arose from her bed, dressed, and walked out of the room healed. To-day she is one of that multitude of living witnesses to the power of the truth that was taught and demonstrated nineteen hundred years ago by Jesus the Christ, and presented to us to-day in Christian Science; for Christian Science rightly defined is the truth about God, man, and the universe.
