[Written for the Sentinel]

Thy All-in-all

Has darkness closed about thy empty heart?
Is hopeless grief and tearful mourning rife?

Forget not thou the Master at the tomb;
For now, as in the olden time,
Thy God is Life!

Seems trusted friend or plighted faith untrue?
This bitter sorrow, sharp as serpent's tooth
Thou canst dismiss, and thy rich hope renew;
For now—it is the Master's word—
Thy God is Truth!

Seems all thy solitary way to love unknown,
And dreary as a starless sky above?
The Friend of all the friendless is thine own;
For now—'tis surely meant for thee—
Thy God is Love!

When mortal life and truth and love prove vain,
And thou, despairing, on thy God dost call,
For thee the calm assurance doth remain;
That now, and ever as to-day,
Thy God is All!
