In Article VIII, Section 6, of the Manual of The Mother Church Mrs. Eddy says: "It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion, and not be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his Leader, and to mankind. By his works he shall be judged,—and justified or condemned." One of the definitions of "defend" is "to protect or shield from attack or violence," while three of the synonyms are "guard," "uphold," "maintain."

Several months ago, during the morning's study of the Lesson-Sermon and the above by-law, the word "defend" kept recurring so persistently to thought that I laid aside everything else to study the deeper, truer meaning of that one word, with the result that when the time came for me to put away my books I felt that I had gained a fuller understanding of the by-law than I had ever had before.

I went about my household duties as usual and about half past ten that morning a knock came on my door. A neighbor brought me the news that my son, who is the rural mail carrier for our section of the country, had met with a very severe accident. His automobile had collided with a big truck and he had been thrown out, and picked up unconscious. He had been hit in the pit of the stomach and badly bruised but there was no laceration. His automobile was a total wreck. When he regained consciousness he asked that word be sent to me immediately, and refusing to be taken to a drug store he got into an automobile belonging to a friend and was driven to the post office. After a rest of about half an hour, with the help of a friend he continued his route, a distance of thirty-six miles over very bad roads.
