Signs of the Times
[From an Editorial, "A Religion of Power," in The Congregationalist]
The point to notice is that Christian religion must be proclaimed and must function as a religion of power. Men and women the world over want a faith that effects something. In the strength that God bestows we can do a great deal toward making sick people well. We can lay hold of invisible forces and make them operate in behalf of the total life of men. We can cleanse the human heart of selfishness and greed; we can make business something besides a savage war to a finsih; we can bind the nations in a fellowship that shall make war a thing of the past. This conception of religion, this desire for its practical effectiveness, I find coming to the front in every hand.
