The Light of the World
THE beneficent ministry of Christian Science is unique in its simplicity. Divine Love casting out fear illustrates this. And when divine Love casts out fear, it heals disease. There is one cause, Spirit, Love, and we do not have to diagnose cases to ascertain if disease is the effect of fear or if morbid fear is the result of disease, for, forsooth, there is no real effect from any but the one cause, Love, and both fear and disease are evil beliefs of which Jesus spoke when he said: "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. ... Which of you convinceth me of sin?"
He also said, however, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." The freedom of the truth means that "now are we the sons of God," and if it seems that we are something else, we simply need to know that the seeming selfhood is the evil belief that Jesus rebuked. All the efforts to determine the derivative and nature of error, or evil, have proved practically void of enlightenment for the race. The reason is obvious, for there is no truth in error, consequently nothing of evil to be explained. In the utterance quoted above, Jesus said all that can be or need be said about error. Since God is the Word, then the words we utter must be words of divine wisdom, in order to have any weight or power. The material, so-called universe is a misstatement of the spiritual. "Matter is an error of statement," writes Mrs. Eddy on page 277 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Christian Science boldly declares and Christian Scientists demonstrate by their healing works that there is no matter, but that infinite Mind with its infinite manifestation is all there is.
When we cease from evil speaking we lose our false beliefs and see God face to face. Then is light, the light of the Word, uncovered to us in all its glory, power, and dominion. The Scripture, "There is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed," is a comforting assurance that man has in divine Science all substance, Truth and Love to make him completely satisfied and content. The revelation of God's allness is disclosed to us as we make good use of the truth we already know. "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
