Revolution

Truth is revolutionary. But this, it must be understood, is true only in a world of relative human conceptions of good and evil. In the spiritual universe in which nothing but good exists any revolutionary process is an impossibility. The words, "Remove the diadem, and take off the crown: this shall not be the same: exalt him that is low, and abase him that is high. I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I will give it him," were spoken only of a material condition of things, governed by human ideals of good and evil.

In this world of human conceptions, then, revolution is inevitable. The story of the human race, as recorded in history, is a mere succession of revolutions of one kind or another; whilst the metaphysical insight of Christ Jesus revealed to his disciples the scientific fact that iniquity would abound before the final triumph of Truth should come. The reason for this is made clear beyond words by Mrs. Eddy. "Science is absolute and final," she writes, on page 99 of "Miscellaneous Writings." "It is revolutionary in its very nature; for it upsets all that is not upright. It annuls false evidence, and saith to the five material senses, 'Having eyes ye see not, and ears ye hear not; neither can you understand.' " Here then is the very essence of revolution embedded in the human consciousness, and summed up in perfect terms by Paul, in his letter to the Galatians, "For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would."

Every revolution, therefore, in the material universe, must proceed from the fundamental cause of the inherent inharmony of evil acted on by the perpetual pressure of good. This really is what Mrs. Eddy terms chemicalization, the mental and physical process involved in the change from a material to a spiritual basis. "This mental fermentation has begun," she writes on page 96 of Science and Health, in speaking of the conflict of forces already manifested in the world, "and will continue until all errors of belief yield to understanding Belief is changeable, but spiritual understanding is changeless." Thus, it is obvious that, while in the spiritual realm revolution is an impossibility, in the material counterfeit it is a necessity of the process of the destruction of the lie in the gradual unfoldment of Truth.
