When a lad of sixteen I was examined by two reputable physicians, who without conferring with one another pronounced my trouble acute Bright's disease, and in confidence told my parents that it would be a miracle if I lived a year. My mother, who was then just becoming interested in Christian Science, decided to have Science treatment for me. A practitioner was accordingly summoned and went to work on the case immediately. My mother explained the fundamentals of Christian Science to me, and her explanation of God as Principle appealed to me as nothing else ever had. Immediately the Bible had a new meaning for me, and the concept of God as Principle and Love came into my consciousness to fill up the void where before had been no thought of God save a few hazy ideas gleaned from the religious teaching under which I had been reared, and which, being based on material premises, I had never been able to accept.
In less than two months I had a complete healing. A year from the time the physicians had passed sentence upon me I was undergoing strenuous military training with a National Guard unit at one of the Government encampments. During this period we were maneuvering over the hills in full marching equipment and covering an average of fifteen miles a day. The rigors of this training did not affect my health in any way except that at the end of the maneuvers I felt stronger than I had ever felt in my life, due to the realization that God is the source of all strength. Following the encampment I returned to school, where I participated in all the athletics of that and following seasons, and never had a return of the trouble for which I had been treated.
During the three years following my healing I attended a denominational boarding school and in spite of the opposition which was encountered, I continued the study of Christian Science, the results of which manifested in my school work were most gratifying. I became aware of capabilities of which I had never before been conscious. During this period I also met and overcame a great many physical ailments. With the aid of a practitioner appendicitis was successfully overcome; also weak eyes, for which I had worn glasses for some time, were healed and the glasses were laid aside.
