It is nearly six years since I first heard of Christian Science

It is nearly six years since I first heard of Christian Science. Now that I understand something of God's law, I look back with dismay at the absurd notions and fears, then so very real to me, which formerly separated me from the understanding of the love of God.

As far back as I can remember, my brother and I were told that we could hardly expect to grow up strong, and when twenty-seven years old he passed on. This increased my fear, and at about the age of twenty-one I became ill with weak lungs, and one internal trouble after another followed. After five years of very bad physical conditions I became much worse in spite of every possible care. For nearly a year I was unable to walk across a room without help. For two consecutive winters I was taken to the Canary Islands, and the summer in between was spent in the Swiss mountains; however, the internal disorders grew worse and an operation was considered necessary, but after nearly three months in a nursing home I was very little better. A year later I became dangerously ill with peritonitis, and another operation was talked of, but, I believe, it was considered too risky. After many weeks in bed I was somewhat better, but was told that I should have to be more careful than ever, as I was liable to another attack. For over four years I had been seldom able to walk, and never without pain; almost always I was lying down or going out only in a Bath chair, and life seemed especially hopeless when, a few months later, I began to suffer great pain caused by an abscess.

It was at this time that a neighbor told me that Christian Science could make me better; and one day my little boy, distressed at seeing me in so much pain, asked me to send for a Christian Scientist. This I did, although I knew nothing whatever of Science. A practitioner came to me and with her loving help the trouble disappeared. In four days I was able to go out in my Bath chair, and after a few days more I was able to walk a little. Soon I took a long journey by train. This recovery seemed so wonderful that both my husband and I then commenced to read Science and Health. For the next few weeks we were in the country, but on the Sunday following our return home we went for the first time to a Christian Science service. I think I may say that from that time I was quite healed. The same week I walked two or three miles in one day, and neither then nor since have I felt the pain which used to trouble me so much. For more than five years I had taken medicine every day. This at first I found very difficult to give up, but after reading part of the third chapter of Colossians, I knew it was not medicine but more charity and love for others that I wanted. Since this realization I have never thought of taking any kind of medicine.
