[Written for the Sentinel]

The Ever Active Mind

Wearied by fruitless striving
I sat in the sunset's glow
By a quietly running river,
Watching its ceaseless flow.

When clear to my inward question
A still, small voice replied:
The Mind that is ever active
Is here exemplified.

Active but never weary,
No slumber nor sleep is here.
The joyous song of the river
Rebuked my fret and fear.

From the glowing heart of the sunset,
From that flowing mountain stream,
Through the mist that had seemed to blind me,
Truth sent this warming gleam.

My weariness dropped like a garment;
Gone were the cares of the day;
There by that purling river
Where ceaseless work seemed play,

The strength of His presence filled me,
His love was to me revealed;
Joy for His goodness thrilled me,
My strife-worn sense was healed.
