Soon after beginning to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
Soon after beginning to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, I saw that physiology and the Bible do not agree. The former says, Be careful with your diet; the latter says, "Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat." I wanted to follow the teachings of the Bible, so I took a large medical book that I was reading and set fire to it, pamphlets advertising medicine for the cure of disease met the same fate, and medicines on hand were thrown out. I knew I wanted no more medicine but would trust to divine power.
Later a sister passed away under medical treatment, and a few weeks afterwards I was overcome with a disease which I suppose was the same as she had. I asked for absent treatment in Christian Science and in a short time there was improvement. I was soon out of doors again working around, though for some days a pain continued in my side. Then demonstrations followed one after another as I put into practice what I learned from the Bible and Science and Health. My mother was healed of a bowel difficulty in a very aggravated form. A sister who was called to stay with her said I had better call a doctor, but then added that it was probably too late. I was reading an article in the Journal at the time, and this gave me such a realization of the presence and power of God that I told my sister just to be patient, for I thought our mother would soon be better, and she was. She was up and around the same day and was never afflicted with the difficulty in that way thereafter. I have been healed of catarrh of the head in a severe form which medical treatment failed to heal. I was treated by a practitioner for what the doctors called gravel, from which I suffered pains indescribable, and was healed in a few treatments.
We had a large dog of which I was very fond. One day while I was watering the horse the dog was kicked on the head, and after walking a short distance he fell over and struggled. My nephew who was standing near by went into the house and soon came running to me saying his father would shoot the dog, but I told him to leave the animal alone and stay away from him. Meanwhile I was realizing the truth about God's creation. When my duties at the barn were attended to I started to see how he was getting along, and to my joy but not surprise he came walking to me in the yard. Soon he was as lively as ever. I had treated him for injuries before with good success.
