It was a lecture that first attracted me toward Christian Science...

It was a lecture that first attracted me toward Christian Science three years ago, and like many I turned to this religion for divine help when material means had failed. Through faithful study of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, I gained an understanding of the truth which later offered me the opportunity to prove God's power in a way that is the privilege of but few to do, for which I have every reason to be extremely grateful to Christian Science.

During the night of September 26, 1918, there was a very severe storm here in Juneau, Alaska, the rain falling in great sheets and torrents, resembling a cloudburst. The morning following presented a threatening scene of gloom and destruction, causing me to leave my home with a strange presentiment. During the forenoon business called me away from my office duties, which resulted in my following the people who were going in the direction of the flats, where the flood was carrying away many beautiful homes. Little did I realize until later how carefully God in all His goodness was guiding my every step during this time.

Like many Alaskan coast towns, Juneau is built mostly upon steep hillsides. My home was located on a bench about one hundred and fifty feet above street level, and when a big slide came down from over two hundred feet above, it struck our house with terrific force, completely demolishing and wrecking everything. My wife was at home, but instead of remaining at the front bay windows, as was her custom when waiting for me, she obeyed the still, small voice which told her plainly not to stay there, but to go into the bathroom. A few seconds later the house, without the least warning, suddenly gave way with an awful crash, except the rear wall and part of the small bathroom floor, the only thing remaining on top.
