[Written for the Sentinel]

The Evening and the Morning

Father , I thank Thee for these clearer rays
Of Truth, the evening radiance and morning glow.
I thank thee for these nights and for these days
Of praising Love. I thank Thee that I know
That Thy creation is revealed. Yea, now
There still is light, although earth's solar beam
Has ceased to shine. This evening, Father, Thou
Hast been revealed anew. To-night there gleam
Across a world awakened from sin's war,
The myriad torches of the men who fell,
Writing with steady glow across the far
Horizon: Weep not, friends, since all is well.

Immensity is filled with grateful song
That flesh wars not with Spirit, and that Love
Conceives nor war nor punishment nor wrong.
Immensity is filled with joy, above
All earthly pleasures, that Mind's thankful throng
Of those who served in earth's last warring strife
Have proved that man is free, unfettered, strong.
Thus doth Love's torch record eternal life
And not eternal punishment. Mind's might
Gleams through the evening and the morning light
Recording Church and government at one,
While God commands His angel, Justice, Write:
In Church and government, God's will is done.
