I was brought up by Christian parents and was quite satisfied with my religion, until a great sorrow entered my life. Both of my parents passed on in less than five months of each other. I turned for comfort to my religion, but found none. How could I love a God who had sent such bereavement? Having the care of sisters and brothers, I tried to follow the paths of duty my parents would have wished. At last physically ill, discouraged, full of fear, and tired of life, I went from one place to another seeking help. After six years doctors feared for my reason, and told me I had only six months to live; however, I slowly recovered. I tried again to follow the teachings of the church, but was never happy.

Then I removed into the country, where one day I met a young Christian Scientist who told me of the book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and offered to send it to me. She made clear in a few hours many things which I had been longing to know for years, and before I had finished readings the chapter on Prayer, I had found the God whom I had been seeking. It gave surcease to my sorrow, lifted from me the burden of care, and life put on a nobler outlook. From that day Christian Science has been my only healer and teacher. Before I merely existed; now I revel in the sunshine of Truth.

Through reading Science and Health I have been healed of chronic stomach trouble, extreme nervousness, and pleurisy. Bilious attacks which used to last a week have been overcome in an hour. Severe headaches have also disappeared, and I am entirely free from many other ailments. One day at school I became very ill with severe pains across the chest and an obstruction in the throat which prevented my swallowing anything except a little water. When I arrived home a message was sent to a practitioner asking for help and then I tried to do a little mental work myself. I was at a loss how to do so, but as I lay perfectly still, these words came to me: "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms." I was very restless but finally fell asleep. Toward morning I awoke. Then I thought, "The prayer of faith shall save the sick when man is governed by God." Immediately the obstruction in the throat was removed and the other discordant conditions abated. I said to myself, "God has healed me." The healing was more wonderful when I called to mind that the conditions were similar to those of an illness which caused me great suffering, and for which I had medical treatment three years.
