In the hope that this testimony will help many who are...
In the hope that this testimony will help many who are struggling with the generally accepted views of scholastic theology, as I was, and in gratitude for a helpful, consistent, reasonable religion, gained from the study of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, I gladly write some of my experiences in Christian Science. The daughter of a minister, granddaughter of a bishop, with two uncles, a brother, and a cousin also ministers, I naturally heard much religious discussion and teaching from early childhood, but never did I hear that which would comfort me in trouble or stress of any kind, or that was a help in time of need, until I read a few copies of the Christian Science Sentinel given me by a neighbor. There for the first time I saw plainly that God is not both a good and a bad intelligence, but good only. The vexed doctrines of theology, which had worried me for years, were logically and satisfactorily settled by reading Science and Health.
I became so interested in the study of this religion, that I forgot to wear my glasses, which an oculist said would always have to be worn; also forgot my body to a great extent, and suddenly realized that I had been healed of neuritis of eighteen years' standing, sick headaches, catarrh, corns, a throat trouble, rheumatism, and an irritable temper. These healings took place nearly nine years ago.
The physical healing constitutes the smallest part of what I have to be grateful for in Christian Science, which is to me the Comforter that the world can neither give nor take away, as I have recently been able to prove in giving up two dear sons, one to serve in the Navy, and one now serving in the Army, having already left for France. In this experience, which humanly speaking leaves me entirely alone in the home, I am uniformly calm and happy, and glad to give my boys to "aid in the ejection of error" (Science and Health, p. 97). I can realize with the Master that "the Father hath not left me alone," and also for my boys that He will give His angels charge over them to keep them in all their ways.
