Excerpts from the writings of Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer...

The Lewistown (Pa.) Sentinel

Excerpts from the writings of Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, appeared in a recent issue. These excerpts, taken from their context, do not at all explain their meaning as intended by her. Mrs. Eddy did teach that man in God's image and likeness is never sick and never sins, but it is in this sense only that she wrote, "Man is never sick, for Mind is not sick and matter cannot be" (Science and Health, p. 393). As to the unreality of matter, Jesus showed this again and again throughout his career on earth. His passing into a closed room without the opening of a door, alone should be ample proof of it. In this particular it is necessary to assume either that matter is unreal or that Jesus is, who survived and overcame every condition of matter. Which horn of the dilemma does our critic wish to take? By his doctrine he cannot logically cling to both.

These excerpts a clergyman is reported to have discussed as false philosophy, and to have said that "all her [Mrs. Eddy's] teachings are in direct contradiction to Christ's." Now Christ Jesus himself gave the test of a true following when he said: "By their fruits ye shall know them;" "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." There are many thousands of people to-day who gladly testify that there is nothing which is in any respect contrary to the teaching of Christ Jesus in Christian Science, when understood, and their testimony is based on understanding and proof. This proof is too strong and overwhelming for any clergyman to shake.
