Holding the Line
In order to be effective the work of Christian Scientists must be based upon a clear comprehension of what the present world conflict represents and includes.
There has never been and can never be but one war, and that one is the conflict of the ages between good and evil, between Spirit and matter, irrespective of what the issues seem to be according to mortal mind's interpretation. Swords and spears, men and chariots, dreadnoughts and torpedoes, trenches and battle planes, are but the expressions of mortal mind's struggle to sustain and preserve its idols or its ideals. But to-day, as ever, the warfare is in the human mind. Battles and bloodshed are always effects. Causation is ever mental, and history ultimately renders its judgments upon the motive behind the action.
The "line" to be held in the thought of Christian Scientists is that which Mrs. Eddy has described as "the scientific line of demarcation between Truth and error, between Spirit and so-called matter" (Science and Health, p. 586). This line is the firmament—"spiritual understanding"—which divine Mind establishes in the awakened consciousness of every mortal and which will be revealed to the receptive thought of every nation and people.
