The first proof I had of the efficacy of the truth as given...
The first proof I had of the efficacy of the truth as given in Christian Science came to me nine years ago, when I was yet in a very critical attitude of mind. Upon my arrival at the union station of a city in the Middle West, a friend with whom I was to spend the night met me. We took the car and went uptown, stopping at the ticket office to make my berth reservation for the next day's journey. Upon opening my bag I immediately knew that I had left my purse, containing the money necessary to continue my journey south, on a seat in that crowded station, and the hopelessness of ever recovering it brought on a fainting sensation.
At this point my friend said that if I wished, she would apply Christian Science to this problem. She spoke gently but confidently, and this inspired me with a ray of hope. I assented, and we retraced our way to the station after an absence of nearly an hour. When we got there she dropped back, leaving me to go forward to do the inquiring. Soon I approached a group of four men, one of them holding up, open to view, my purse. Knowing that my cards were inside, I gave him my name and claimed the purse. He manifested gladness in finding the rightful owner, and said, "This is one case in a thousand," expressed congratulation, and declined to accept any reward. What to me seemed impossible, had come to pass. I did not perceive how, but was sure it was through my friend's application of Christian Science.
A year passed, however, before I turned to Christian Science and sought a practitioner for help. I was then in such mental and physical distress that I read the literature eagerly and hungrily. Science and Health was in my hands almost constantly for days, weeks, and months. The practitioner led me along wisely and lovingly, with the result that I was healed of stomach and bowel trouble of years' standing, also of severe attacks of neuralgia.
