A few years ago I heard of Christian Science for the first time. I did not then understand anything about its healing power, but the chapter on Prayer in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, was such a revelation to me and seemed to answer many of my questions about God so clearly, that I commenced an earnest study of the book. I had been considered very delicate from childhood and had always been under the doctor's care. Owing to the fact that I never had any sight in one eye, I had been obliged to wear glasses from a very early age to relieve the strain on the other. An eminent oculist on one occasion, after an examination by X-rays, pronounced the eye blind at the base. I had been studying Science and Health for only a short time when with my new understanding of God I was able to discard my glasses, and some time afterward discovered that I was beginning to see a little with the eye that had always been blind. The improvement continued, and to-day the eye is normal. I never suffer any discomfort whatever from my sight, and though my clerical duties necessitate long hours and entail work of an exacting nature, I have not had the slightest need for glasses. Severe headaches due to eyestrain, from which I used to suffer frequently, have also disappeared.
Since the healing of my sight, many other beautiful demonstrations of the healing power of Truth have been brought about through the faithful work of a practitioner. I would like to mention two which have proved to me beyond all question that Christian Science is able to overcome pain under all conditions. The first was the healing of what is called a polypus, supposed to be hereditary in my case. Two of these growths had been removed previous to my hearing about Christian Science and I was then waiting for a third operation, but having suffered severely on the last occasion I was hesitating about undergoing the ordeal again. Owing to the interest aroused by the study of Christian Science I thought only occasionally about the trouble, until one day it occurred to me that all the painful symptoms had disappeared and there was no need for another operation. I had no return of this distressing complaint until four or five years later. At that time I accidentally received a severe blow on the nose and soon afterward some of the symptoms were again manifested. Through the loving work of the practitioner, however, these were overcome in a day or so, and no return whatsoever has taken place since.
When I went to have some teeth extracted, the Christian Science practitioner who had rendered such effective help on other occasions accompanied me to the dentist's office, and treatment was given me, with the result that I had ten teeth extracted with no pain or discomfort of any kind. The whole experience was such a revelation to me that some time afterward, when I had to return to the dentist to have two more extractions, I went alone with such entire confidence that the occasion was a complete demonstration.
