Christian Scientists have noticed, with no little surprise,...

The Springfield (Mass.) Union

Christian Scientists have noticed, with no little surprise, that The Springfield Union has allowed a doctor of divinity to speak through its columns of Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, in terms of personal vilification such as are usually put beyond the bounds of decency. Probably the editor was not prepared to find such matter in the copy of a reverend gentleman who was announced to speak in the name of justice for aged persons who have ministered to the spiritual needs of men. Truly, there should be no reason to expect that a preacher speaking in favor of a fund for decrepit ministers might take advantage of such an occasion for a verbal assault on the leader of another denomination.

The fact is, however, that some members of the ministerial profession are liable to this weakness; and it is an even more curious fact that this particular minister represents a denomination whose bishops are explicitly ordained to "heal the sick." Surely he would do well to approach Christian Science as a learner, and become able to obey this Christian command, instead of speaking against Mrs. Eddy, who could and did heal the sick and was the means of restoring the understanding and practice of Christian healing to the world.
