The Quill published extracts from an attack on Christian Science...

West Plains (Mo.) Quill

The Quill published extracts from an attack on Christian Science delivered in West Plains by a revivalist of the latterday school of evangelism. "No faith need be kept with a heretic," said the ecclesiasts to John Huss, and burned him at the stake. "No regard for truth need be observed in dealing with Christian Science," is the attitude of the dogmatist of to-day, and to that he religiously adheres. Even as his prototype applied the torch to John Huss' funeral pyre at Prague, so the self-appointed critic of Christian Science goes up and down the land uttering aspersions against Mary Baker Eddy and the religion she founded.

Now Christian Scientists ask nothing more than to be fairly dealt with. Is that too much to expect at the hands of a minister of the gospel of Truth? The truth is, that through the understanding of Christian Science multiplying hosts are emerging from the valley of decision, rejoicing in the new-found liberty of the sons of God. These bodily saved and spiritually regenerated individuals are not mental or moral incompetents, but rather representative citizens in any community; they are your friends, neighbors, relatives, perchance. Many of them were devoted Bible students,—all are now. Many were exemplary Christians,—all are striving to be. Many have literally returned from going down into the pit, restored to health and usefulness through the healing power of Christ as revealed in Christian Science. Not one item of destructiveness, not a downward tendency, can truthfully be accredited to the writings of Mrs. Eddy. Contrariwise, her loyal students in their lives exemplify the constructive character of Christian Science. Healing the sick, reforming the sinner, elevating the race—such are the fruits by which this Christian denomination has the right to be known.

Why should any regard Christian Science as a heresy? Thoughtful reading of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, will convince anyone of fair mind that the essentials of the Scriptural scheme of salvation are all included therein. True, some of the ordinances are shorn of materialism, but these are none the less truly, because spiritually, observed. Said Paul, "The letter killeth." The real issue, then, between the Church of Christ, Scientist, and the other Christian denominations amounts to this: Shall the church return to the healing of the sick as taught and practiced by Jesus, and by his followers for three hundred years after his earthly ministry closed?
