More than twenty years ago Christian Science healed me...
More than twenty years ago Christian Science healed me of an affection of the head and spine of such an extreme nature that one physician had told me if I did not have an operation I would probably lose my mind. The pain at times was almost unendurable, and I had tried several schools of medicine with little or no relief.
About four years previous to this I had taken Christian Science treatment for some minor ailment and had been cured, but I was not sufficiently interested to look into the subject, and soon returned to medicine, with the above result. Many times my thoughts turned toward Christian Science, and at last in my dire need I sought a practitioner and was healed in a few treatments. Two or three times since then some of the old symptoms have tried to assert themselves, but they have always been cast out by the application of the truth. I have learned that in order to attain health and happiness I must supplant thoughts of hate with those of love, and good will must take the place of criticism; while for thoughts of envy and jealousy I must substitute those of gratitude and thankfulness. Discouragement, idleness, apathy, procrastination, and disorder must give way to courage, perseverance, alertness, system, and order. Thus in a measure I have learned what our Leader meant when she said that "the human self must be evangelized" (Science and Health, p. 254). When this rule is followed I find I can demonstrate for myself and others the Principle which casts out disease and sin.
In my immediate family many diseases have been overcome by this mighty truth. A cough of about eight years' standing, which had grown to be most serious, yielded in two or three treatments. A child in the last stages of diphtheria was restored to health when seemingly she had but a short time to live. Colds, rheumatism, poisoning, tonsillitis, bowel trouble, and many other discordant conditions have faded into nothingness through the application of an understanding of this wonderful Principle. My experience has proved to me beyond a doubt that Christian Science does heal sickness, sorrow, and sin. I was a singer and had suffered untold agonies from what is commonly termed the artistic temperament, so not the least part of my healing was the finding that this particular idiosyncrasy does not belong to man.
