For the enlightenment of one whose letter entitled "Transcendental Thinking" appeared in a recent issue, permit me to state that Christianity as Jesus taught it and as Mrs. Eddy teaches it in Science and Health, is not a religion of nonresistance. The world believes that unless resistance is physical or humanly mental, it is not resistance at all. This is the doctrine of fighting fire with fire, referred to by Jesus as a "house divided against itself." Christian Science, on the other hand, declares that if the one and only cause or Principle of the universe, including man, is good, the only possible logical conclusion is that all the power there is proceeds from good, and that consequently evil appears to have power only because mankind have been educated to believe in and rely upon what is obviously a supposition. Jesus referred to evil as "a liar, and the father of it;" in other words, an illusion, a waking dream, from which the human mind needs to be aroused by the truth of being. In Romans Paul admonishes us not to be overcome by evil, but to overcome evil through the individual understanding of the allness of good. This is Christian Science.
