Among the Churches

Current Notes

Mt. Clemens, Mich.—During the year ending October 31 the Christian Science Society has placed racks for holding literature in the railroad station, ticket office, and in the jail. Twenty hotels were supplied with one month's free subscription to The Christian Science Monitor. The Monitor is also furnished the Y. M. C. A. of Camp Selfridge Aviation Field; also one copy of Science and Health. The following periodicals were distributed: 468 Sentinels, 112 Journals, 758 Monitors, 12 Herolds, 61 Quarterlies, 305 pamphlets, 3 Hymnals.

San Francisco, Cal.—When reports were received from Washington announcing the establishment of military camps, it became apparent that over thirty thousand men would be located around the bay and forty thousand more at Menlo Park. The Presidio was rapidly filling with regular troops, and arrangements were made for the housing and accommodation of sixteen thousand men there.

Fourth an Sixth Churches of Christ, Scientist, were directly responsible for the distribution of our literature in the Presidio and the military establishments around the bay. Neither church felt it could do this work alone. At as early a date as possible the presidents of the churches of San Francisco met in conference and looked over the ground. It was then decided to open a reading room for the Army and Navy. A store was chosen, a lease was signed, two temporary librarians were appointed, and although everything was not quite ready, the rooms were opened August 9. It was not expected by the workers that large numbers of men would flock in, but gradually the interested ones found the place, and up to date, October 1, more than three hundred men have come to the rooms. The very fact that the literature is sought, read, purchased, and carried away each day by growing numbers is sufficient proof of the value of the work in this district.
