It is with a sense of deep gratitude that I relate how I was healed through reading the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. In August, 1913, I became very ill. According to the statement of the physician whom I called in, it was a case of heart trouble. I left no means of relief untried and after a few months consulted a "nature-cure" physician. There was an improvement at first, but three months later I had a stroke of paralysis, and from that moment things went on from bad to worse. The attacks of heart trouble occurred once in two or three days, then daily. I lost the faculty of speech and felt that the end was near. Then I settled my accounts with life, made my will, and took the holy communion.
It was at this juncture that a copy of Der Herold der Christian Science was received from a friend, and disregarding the physician's advice that I avoid all reading, I looked the periodical over. I had never heard of Christian Science until then, but during the reading my attention was caught by the name of the text-book, and I asked my friend to let me have it. I do not believe I have ever read anything with greater interest than this book by our beloved Mrs. Eddy. The day after I had my first glimpses of it a thorough change began to take place within me, and I told an acquaintance who called that I expected to arise and take up my work when I had read the book through. Although a few made fun of me, I did not allow this to affect me. When three days later I came to the end of the book, I got up and, as I had foretold, attended to my occupation in the garden, where I did work which filled some around me with surprise, while it caused others to marvel.
Truth has not only helped me in a physical way, but through the spiritual uplift which I have experienced has made of me a new man. The truth as taught by Mrs. Eddy has awakened me to new life. It often seems to me like a dream that after an illness of six months, when I was near the confines of death, I should have been thus raised to health within a few days. I thank God from the depths of my heart for the help received, and I am equally grateful to our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for Christian Science.
