Christian Science came to me at a time when I was greatly...

Christian Science came to me at a time when I was greatly in need of spiritual succor, for I was indeed far away from God. I did not seek it because of any physical disability, but accepted it as a religion, because I believed it was right, and because I was tired of sin and of living the life of a miserable outcast, since to my mind that is what I was. When one believes in God other than as a God of love, when he believes in a vengeful God who sends failures, sickness, and misery as punishment, he is far away from the true God. But I thank God for Christian Science; it has taught me that He is ever present and just, and knows no evil, — no sin, sickness, or death.

I was living in darkness and was on the most intimate terms with sin when the first ray of light became visible to me. I used profanity of the most depraved kind and was an inveterate smoker. Drinking was also on my list of faults, and was the evil that was most reluctant to leave me; but I am indeed happy to state that by the persistent and conscientious study of Christian Science and the Bible these habits, as well as dishonesty, have gone completely out of my life.

I want to tell of another great healing which has come to me through the knowledge of God as the one and only power, — that of a deep-grown belief in the power of hypnotism as a cure of disease and for other purposes. While I had accepted Christian Science as a religion, I did not fully agree with Mrs. Eddy as regards her thought of hypnotism, having become imbued with the notion that possibly she did not fully comprehend the scientific quality of the subject, and therefore underrated its value.
