I am glad to tell of some of the benefits derived from four years' study of Christian Science. The unfoldment has been gradual, and has not included sudden illuminations. I am very grateful for the protection, guidance, and comfort of the light I have had. The silent, unlabored energy of Spirit has purified desire, lessoned fear, and purged motives. From the choas of this so-called life the facts of existence are emerging, for I am learning that Spirit is the only substance, Love the only force, Truth the only reality. Turning promptly, resolutely, courageously to the light, destroys the false claims of mortal mind. I am grateful for the admonition in Science and Health (p. 407), "Let the perfect model be present in your thoughts instead of its demoralized opposite."
Many times I have proved that God is a present help in time of trouble. Soon after beginning the study of Science my mother called me down-stairs one night during a severe storm. While reading in the Bible my thought was arrested by the words from Isaiah, "My people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places; when it shall hail, coming down on the forest." The application of the lines was realized, and peace reigned in the home. On another occasion, as I was about to read a paper before a club, I found myself the victim of stage-fright. By promptly denying the reality of matter and mortal mind, and affirming the existence of the one Mind, and good as the only presence, I was able to read my article. The delivery was complimented by friends, and also my lack of self-consciousness.
Recently, as I stepped from beside a table to a desk chair, it turned, throwing me on to my knees on the floor. I limped for three steps; but almost without conscious argument I realized the truth of being and the next step was painless. Error whispered that it was not anything, anyway. That night, however, on removing my shoe there was a discolored, swollen place on the foot. I declared, "Well, it was something." A week or so later I wondered why the discoloration and swelling did not disappear as the pain had ; then I realized that mortal mind had been holding the error as real, and with this uncovering the foot became normal. Again, while traveling one summer a younger sister had her thumb crushed between the door and the casing of a sleeping-car. She was suffering intensely when another sister brought her to our section and asked me to read to her from Science and Health while she did the mental work. The suggestion came that I did not know what to read, but immediately it was reversed by declaring the existence of only one Mind. I then opened the book at page 397, and read the "remedy for accidents." So quickly was the situation controlled that a brother in the same car did not know of the accident until the following winter.
