Eleven years ago Christian Science healed my mother, who had been confined to bed for months with what the doctors called organic heart trouble. She had spent years at a time in hospitals and sanitariums, and had tried change of climat only to grow steadily worse, until her condition was pronounced hopeless. A friend told her of Christian Science, and although prejudiced against what she thought it to be, as a last resort she called a practitioner. In two weeks she was up and walking, and she has been unusually well and active ever since.
This healing seemed so wonderful to us that we realized Christian Science must be the same truth Jesus taught and practised, and we began to read Science and Health with the desire to understand it. I found that it answered questions about which I had wondered all my life, and that it made Jesus' teachings plain and practical,—that it made the Bible a book I could understand. For eleven years it has met every physical need, healing me of a serious nervous break down and giving me increasingly better health. It helped me wonderfully when my baby was born. I was at the piano, playing and singing Christian Science hymns, twenty minutes before the child came.
While I am deeply grateful for the physical help received, I am much more grateful for the understanding of God which Christian Science has given me,—a God who is not far off, but with us all the time, who is infinite good, our Life, our consciousness, our Father-Mother; who has made us perfect and given us all good. I am learning that God is Love, and that as God's image and likeness I must reflect Love; I must have no thought that is not loving and kind, that does not reveal perfect God, perfect man, and a perfect universe to me. I am learning to watch my thoughts more carefully and to try to follow Jesus' teachings and example, to have that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus," the Mind which heals and blesses.—Jessie Houseman Spitzley, Detroit, Mich.
