Through much sorrow and mental anguish, as well as...
Through much sorrow and mental anguish, as well as physical weakness, I sought for truth, for some sure guidance, for a knowledge of the living God. My father was a minister, and he had taught me to get great help from the Sermon on the Mount. So much comfort was gained from the Bible that I took a special Bible course at Oberlin College and Theological Seminary with a view to being a Bible teacher. I tried to keep my thought free from prejudice and open to truth.
A year after leaving Oberlin I became very weak and ill, and for a year and a half suffered from what the doctors called incipient tuberculosis, neurasthenia, nervous exhaustion, stomach and heart trouble. For six months I was under the care of a trained nurse, and for many months after that followed the treatment used in such cases. During the early part of my illness some Christian Science literature was sent to me, but supposing that Christian Science was not Christian, I told the nurse to put the literature in the fire. Months later, when I was becoming very much discouraged, for the weakness and other symptoms still persisted, a friend offered me some copies of the Sentinel. I did not care to take them, but was ready to see if there might possibly be any help. On opening one with the hope that there might be some good even in Christian Science, I came at once to a statement which I accepted as true. Right then I knew that the message of Jesus was for all time and all peoples, and the statement was made that any person could prove this for himself. I did not want to read any more, but reached out at once in prayer for a proof, and received it.
I began to hope that Christian Science was true. I got a copy of Science and Health and began to put its teachings to the test, taking Bible promises and trusting them. Immediately I received relief from stomach disorder which had troubled me for ten years, but I still went slowly, testing every step. I had much prejudice against Mrs. Eddy, but I kept reading and trying to apply what I read. A practitioner was asked to help me, and it was not long before all signs of tuberculosis were gone and I knew that Christian Science was the Christ-message which I must give to others. It is beyond all comparison better than anything I ever knew before.
