The Express recently published a letter from a correspondent which deals in a rather general way with the religious teachings of Christian Science. It is put under the heading "A Religious Theory," but it is not quite clear whether the intention is to describe Christian Science or something wholly different.

Christian Science has no relation whatsoever to occultism, Oriental philosophy, mysticism, or mesmerism, nor can it ever have. This Science, founded upon a fixed and definite Principle, is demonstrated in the overcoming of evil according to very definite rules which are clearly set forth in its text-book. It is wholly in line with the Scriptural teachings of the superiority of Spirit over matter, of good over evil. It substantiates the Scriptural records of the early miracles, which illustrate the eternal law of divine Mind through which mankind was healed in Jesus' time and may be healed today. It utilizes spiritual truth to negative false beliefs in the human thought. It acquaints people intelligently with the God who is Love, or divine Spirit. As the truth of being comes into view through spiritual understanding, all men, as the psalmist says, awake in God's likeness; that is to say, they find their original or true being as the children of God, made, as the Scriptures declare, in the image and likeness of God, good, not evil.

Your correspondent refers to the origin of Christian Science in a way which might be misleading. Christian Science, or the "divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love" (Science and Health, p. 107), was discovered by Mrs. Eddy in 1866. This discovery of the Christ Science and its Principle was afterward set forth in her work "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," which is the only text-book on the subject. The study of this book enables the student to utilize the power of the divine Mind,—the Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus," and which the apostle Paul urged all Christians to have in them. The supremacy of this Mind over all evil is as eternally demonstrated as truth, and was indicated in the statement by the Master, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also," namely, heal sickness and sin. Jesus also said, "Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world." Christian Science wholly eschews the use of will-power and eliminates the selfish element of the human mind, whence, because of its ignorance, fear, and sin, all ills proceed.
