In one of his recent contributions to the columns of the Free Press, Doctor — attempted an explanation of what Christian Science teaches in regard to the cure of a tumor. This is not the first time the doctor has referred to Christian Science, and in a manner which betokened his lack of understanding of the subject. It is no doubt a modest statement to say that many admirers and readers of the Free Press and of other papers are justified in feeling that undue and excessive use is being made of the press and other avenues for the purpose of exploiting disease and furthering the interests of materia medica; and it is with due respect to its adherents that attention is drawn to the history of medicine as disclosing altogether too many shortcomings to warrant the efforts that are being made to give it a dominating influence in the world.
Many well-meaning people who at one time agreed with the statement that "Christian Science is all right only where there is no organic ailment," have since learned through observation and experience that this Science has healed cases when the knife had been recommended as a last resort, and even after it had been made use of and when all earthly hopes had vanished. This result has not been accomplished through a mere "denial," or through the determination of the human will to disbelieve in disease; it has come about through discarding all human speculation, superstition, and irrational concepts concerning God and His intent and relation to man made in His likeness. Mrs. Eddy has well said on page 180 of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," that "to reduce inflammation, dissolve a tumor, or cure organic disease, I have found divine Truth more potent than all lower remedies. And why not, since Mind, God, is the source and condition of all existence?"
