The Sun,

In further reply to Mr.—permit me to say that the sacred name of Jesus of Nazareth is associated with Christian Science because his command to his followers throughout all time was not only to preach this gospel but to "heal the sick." Christian Scientists look to Christ as their example and way-shower. He taught his disciples how to heal, and the method that he expounded, and which they successfully adopted, is precisely that by which Christian Science is now being demonstrated as the power of spiritual law to overcome sickness and sin. This is no mere academic statement, as quite a host of witnesses can testify. This healing is the fulfilment, in part at any rate, of that confident declaration of the Master: "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also."

Your correspondent more than hints that Christian Scientists sometimes fail to heal. That is not denied. Christian Science, which is primitive Christianity, the knowledge or understanding of and trust in God, must be applied through human agency, and therefore it is subject more or less to human imperfection, but there is abundant evidence at the disposal of any unprejudiced inquirer that its percentage of successes is greater than that of any other method of healing known. In this there is no claim to perform miracles, as your correspondent suggests. The only claim that Christian Scientists make is that in the measure of their spiritual understanding or apprehension of Truth, they can reflect Christlike qualities and so demonstrate the power of God to heal.
