About seven years ago I was healed through Christian Science of what the doctors pronounced a complication of diseases, after material remedies had failed to relieve me. Among these ailments were nervousness, bowel disorder, ovarian trouble, and an abscess. For a number of years I had not been well, and suffered dreadfully from female trouble and great weakness. I had several physicians and took many kinds of medicines, but with only temporary relief.
In February, 1906, while living in Denver, Col., I became very sick, and was worse than I had ever been. At this time I had two doctors. The second one told me that the fever was high and my condition serious, and that I must be removed to a hospital at once, as the best of care was necessary. Accordingly I was sent to a hospital, where I stayed almost two weeks. Then I begged to be taken home, although I was not well and could not stand alone, or even by the help of two others. I had to be moved from the hospital to the carriage in an invalid's chair, and the doctor and nurse said I must be put to bed as soon as I reached home, for I would be worse if I tried to sit up. The doctor visited me daily, each time telling me I was still seriously ill and giving me little hope of recovery. Then I began to pray very earnestly to understand God and to feel His help and presence here on earth.
It was at this time that I decided to try Christian Science, and I believe that this decision came in answer to prayer. I knew very little of this religion, and had learned what I did know from a friend who was studying the literature. I loved all that she explained to me of its teachings; it seemed more like the truth to me than my own religion, although I was a faithful member of another church. I had heard of a few cases of healing in Christian Science, and these gave me hope; but while I was sick no one asked me to try it,—simply taking it up myself as a last resort.
