I suffered for several years with severe anemia, which brought on all the troubles believed to be connected with it, such as headaches, dizziness, etc. No physician was able to relieve me, and while I followed the prescriptions of each one, I relied chiefly on the strength of my will in order to emerge from this condition, although I also trusted in God to help. Nevertheless, my faith in God proved weak, and failed to furnish me with the proper support; yet I used all my strength in the struggle and, in order to renew my courage, read the Bible daily. The teachings which I thought I found therein, however, seemed not to accord with the explanations of the pastors, and more than once I felt that I had completely lost my way. When rheumatic pain was added to my trouble, the fear gained possession of me that I might never be restored to health, and I lost all hope and faith in life.
It was at this juncture that I heard of Christian Science; and feeling from the start that it contained something more than the current theological teachings, I made up my mind to investigate. Through the great sense of love shown by the practitioner, and her excellent way of explaining things to me, I gained a better understanding of God, and began to draw nearer unto Him who is "our refuge and strength" in times of distress. I took courage again, and my health gradually returned. All that had seemed obscure became illumined through Christian Science, and thus I gained the certainty of an ever present God. This brought about my healing; I understood that my troubles as well as my fears were illusions only, and happiness returned into my life.
I feel that I am daily getting stronger morally and physically, and I cannot be too thankful to God, whom we know never to be beyond reach; and I am grateful to Mrs. Eddy for her life-work, the result of which is such a benefit to mankind. In closing, I would express the wish that in a city like this, where religion only too often assumes an abstract and complicated character, Christian Science might bring comfort to all who are not yet acquainted with its teachings.
