Hamar Stiftstidende
The Rev. Mr.—some time ago criticized Christian Science in a way that causes me to ask for space for a brief correction. He says that "it is difficult to understand how a able containing so much error and humbug has been able to enlist so many," but he entirely fails to explain the nature of this error. He very correctly says that "Christian Science is healing by knowledge," and it is by the correct knowledge of God, according to Jesus' own words: "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." What must mankind be delivered from, if not from sin, sickness, and death, and of what did Jesus' works consist?
Christian Science is an interpretation of the religion taught and practised by Jesus, a spiritual understanding and a practical application of his teaching. Jesus commanded that all people should be made his disciples, telling them to "preach the gospel" and "heal the sick," and the healing should prove the understanding of his teaching: "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; . . . they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." Christian Science has taken the full consequence of Jesus' teaching, and declares that preaching and healing must follow each other and not be separated. This healing is not founded on will-power or suggestion, but on the absolute truth of divine law and power.
The mission of Christian Science is not primarily to produce the physical healing, but the physical healing is an effect of the spiritual, the result of a higher understanding of God and the Christ. Thousands of thinking men and women in every walk of life have joined this movement, and all these people have come because of spiritual and physical healing. Unnumbered people owe life and happiness to Christian Science, having failed to get relief through any other means.
