[Written for the Sentinel]

Divine Causation

Not from the soil doth spring the glowing rose,
But from th' eternal source of beauty.—Hark,
What harmony emits the mounting lark,
As music forth from music's fountain flows!

The rippling woodland stream, the whisp'ring tree,
The tinted pageantry of field and glen,
Reflect the perfect love of God to men,
For those who, seeing, hear, and hearing, see.

Not from the human bosom, falt'ring, rise
The ministries that bless the needy earth;
Divine abundance gives them gracious birth
Whene'er the fitted channel ready lies.

Oh, for the seeing eye, the hearing ear,
Attuned to sense the higher harmonies;
For in Truth's seed the perfect blossom lies,
And answer is enfolded in true prayer.
