[Written for the Sentinel]

Christmas Bells

The merry bells at Christmas—tide
Fling out their golden chimes of cheer,
While all the earth a moment stays
Its toil, in happiness to hear.

And high and low, and far and near,
The echoes catch the glad refrain:
"Glory to God—glory to God—
Good will—good will on earth again."

Still bright in every darkling sky
There shines the Star to guide our way,
Irradiant to the wise in heart,
Far from the noisy marts of day;

And, as of yore, the angel throng
Still holds its watch above the earth,
While yet the wondrous glory gleams
When Christ in some lone heart hath birth.

Then ring ye out, sweet Christmas bells,
Ring far across the earth your cheer,
For Christ is come again to bless
The seeing eye, the hearing ear.

And low and sweet, or high and clear,
Earth's watchers hear the happy strain:
"Glory to God—glory to God—
Good will—good will on earth again."
