I would like to tell what Christian Science has done for...
I would like to tell what Christian Science has done for me, with the hope that I may thus help others. Over three years ago, after having bitterly opposed this teaching for seventeen months, I gradually became interested and began to read the Lesson-Sermons with my husband. Six weeks later our oldest little girl was taken quite ill one night. I dosed her as usual with a drug, for I was not quite satisfied to trust her to Christian Science treatment. The medicine had no effect, however, and her fever continued alarmingly high. The second day I telephoned for a physician, who diagnosed the case as scarlet fever and a throat disease. He took a culture of the child's throat and left, saying he would return the next morning, and told me to use a material remedy which he prescribed.
After the doctor left I thought, Well, if she has those two terrible diseases, God is the only one who can heal her. I therefore had my husband telephone a Christian Science practitioner, who immediately began treatment absently. The next morning when the doctor arrived he said, "The health department notified me about ten o'clock last evening that the culture did not develop." He then walked to the child's bed to examine the rash again, and said: "This rash has changed overnight. Why, this must be only a stomach rash." He wished to discharge the case, but I was still so full of fear that I insisted upon his returning again the next day; and he did. The fourth day he said there was no use in his coming any more, but if the fever still continued he would put up the scarlet fever sign and call it one of those mysterious cases.
The child's temperature went down, and I telephoned the doctor to that effect the next morning. I asked him how I would know if it was scarlet fever. He laughed and said, "Oh, you will know it all right, for she will peel, and her little sister will take it." All this time I gave her no medicine and the practitioner was giving absent treatment. In ten days' time she did "peel," and the little sister was taken ill. I am sure now, however, that if I had not had so much fear, she need not have been sick. However, within one week she was entirely healed.
