[Written for the Sentinel]

"Songs in the night"

A song may sing its simple way
Where sermons fail to reach;
A song sometimes the heart may stay
When prophets vainly preach.

Some loving hymn through seasons drear,
When discord darkest seemed,
Has brought the heavenly presence near,
And doubting hearts redeemed.

'Tis good to sing the good we know,
A grateful song to raise,
Forever offering, as we grow,
The ministry of praise.

'Tis Love divine that giveth songs
When hours are dark and drear;
'Tis loving hearts to whom belongs
The faith and joy to hear.

Our love should never silent be,
It should not fail to sing;
And thus in joyous harmony
Love's praise shall ever ring.
