In a recent issue the Rev.— writes: "The science of mental healing need not be concerned with any special cult. To believe in the active powers of faith it is not necessary to become a Christian Scientist or to attach one's self to any church in particular; neither is it necessary to leave any church."
From this it is quite evident that your contributor is laboring under fears which he finds it difficult to conceal. The fact of the matter is, that many today can see no other alternative than the course indicated; and for that reason great numbers are finding their way into the Christian Science church. There is only one explanation for this. It is to be found in the purpose of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy, as stated in the "Manual of The Mother Church" (p. 17), "to organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing."
That this purpose is being fulfilled successfully is proved in the lives of vast numbers who are finding health and happiness that no other church and no other healing agency could supply. Moreover, there are those who have taken the very course advised by the critic, that is, in reading the books written by the clergyman who started the Emmanuel movement, and yet have found all this to lead them straight into Christian Science. We would like to have your correspondent explain to your readers how it is that the Emmanuel movement has not grown in this country, and how it is that the attempt to bring it into the Church of England has apparently failed. Is it not because Christian Science already occupies the field, and provides for poor suffering humanity's needs in a way that leaves nothing to be desired?
