[Written for the Sentinel]

The Pilot

"When Love is at the helm of thought,"*
Securely moves the ship;
The filling sails of impulse caught,
The staying ropes and rigging taut,
And songs upon each lip.

"When Love is at the helm of thought,"
What treasures fill the hold!
Wealth of good deeds for others wrought,
Rich revelations humbly bought,
And resolution bold.

"When Love is at the helm of thought,"
The promised port shines clear;
No distant horizon-hid spot
At Hesperus, but each moment sought,
When Love is by to steer.
