The belief that my experience with Christian Science may...
The belief that my experience with Christian Science may lead some others to seek blessings as rich as those I now enjoy, prompts me to tell of my first wonderful demonstration, which relieved me almost instantaneously of the many years of physical and mental suffering with which I had been afflicted. While in the East, within a few years I was bereaved of a dear sister, two brothers, my father, mother, and afterward my own dear child, and as a result I was left almost a physical wreck. I had been brought up in my early life to love and revere all things which tended to promote the spiritual within me, so that my mind should have been receptive, but instead my sorrow hardened my heart to rebellion. The teaching of my church now seemed a mockery. As it looked to me, the affliction was sent, not by a loving Father, but by a hard and cruel one.
Conditions began to develop in my physical experience which threatened a like fate to that of my brother. Believing a change of climate would be beneficial to myself and children, my husband decided our course to California; later a visit to a dear neighbor opened to me the gates of heaven. Peace now reigned within my heart, and I knew God as my Father, the gentle and loving Father who comforteth me when afflicted. The words of this kind neighbor opened the way to a clearer understanding of the truth. Noticing my extreme nervousness, she asked me if I had ever heard of Christian Science. I answered that I had not. To my question, if Scientists believed in God and in Christ, came the answer that nothing but good comes from God. The food for my "famished affections" (Science and Health, p. 17) was at hand, and I eagerly partook of it.
From that hour I have been free, and the world grows more beautiful and lovely. The Bible is now an open book, and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy has pointed the way to its treasures, for which I am most deeply thankful.
