In June, 1909, when I was away at sea, my wife had a chill, and two doctors, diagnosing her case as appendicitis, insisted on an immediate operation. When I arrived home I elicited the fact that the operation had been a mistake and that the trouble was something entirely different. Feeling very indignant, I said, "I'll have nothing more to do with doctors; I will become a Christian Scientist," without knowing in the least how to do so. Immediately afterward, however, I met an old friend whom I had not seen for several years, and when I told her about my wife, she said that she herself had become a Christian Scientist. I felt that this was evidently an answer to my desire, so I asked her to tell me about Christian Science, and she gave me every assistance to study it.

For a month I inquired diligently, constantly comparing Mrs. Eddy's teachings with the Bible. I could find no flaw in the reasoning or anything illogical in the statements, so I came to the conclusion that the arguments were irrefutable, though I was unable to accept or even to comprehend more than the first steps. I had not hitherto thought of my own healing, although I had suffered for many years from what is called gun-deafness, for which two medical men had told me there was no known cure. At this stage, when halting between two ways and waiting for guidance, I was in church one evening, and as the clergyman read indistinctly I feared that, as so often happened, I would not hear, but quickly came the inspiring thought, that according to Christian Science there is no such thing as deafness. As this thought took possession of me, my ears were "unstopped," even as if a wall had toppled over, and I heard the service throughout.

I felt overjoyed at this demonstration, for it showed me conclusively that I was on the right way. It took me a long time to overcome all the old narrow beliefs, but gradually these have been replaced by the true ideas gained through Christian Science. As my thought has improved, my body has followed suit, and many minor discords have disappeared. I wish I could add that my hearing is absolutely perfect, but it has not yet reached that stage, though it must in time. At present it occasions me only slight inconvenience, and it has certainly improved since my first recovery.
