The Lectures
Prof. Hermann S. Hering, lecturing on Christian Science at the Salle des Sociétés Savantes, was introduced in the following words by Prof. Alfred Goodrich:—
We are assembled here this evening for the purpose of hearing an explanation of a great moral subject which is attracting the attention of thoughtful people in every civilized land. If Christian Science is what its followers believe it to be, then it is the greatest and most important subject before the world today, because it deals with the living present and with the everlasting future life of man. With the errors and discords of the past it has nothing to do,—they are dead. But to our present and future problems Christian Science makes a direct and practical appeal, and it points the way to their successful solution.
It may be taken for granted that every one here present desires to know the truth, because what is not true is false, and everything that is false is profitless. In all our acts and dealings, whether social, domestic, political, artistic, or commercial, we wish to know the truth, for truth is always right. The Saviour said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." In other words, when we know the truth about social and business affairs, the truth about life and health, we will no longer suffer from the fruits of error, which are sickness, pain, sorrow, discord, and, worst of all, the pangs of conscience.
