Christian Science has given to mankind the spiritual explanation...
The Daily Republican
Christian Science has given to mankind the spiritual explanation of how to grasp intelligently the truth about sin's false claim of power in mortal thought. It has proved that God's law is easily made superior to evil, by right thinking and unity with God, as David san: "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: who forgiveth all thine iniquities ; who healeth all thy diseases; . . . who crowneth thee with loving-kindness and tender mercies." Yet there are those who say that Christian Science is not a religion of the soul, but caters to the human body and its sinful desires, when really the whole purport of Christian Science is to encourage mankind "to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord;" as Paul taught that they may mentally direct their daily life so as successfully to put "off . . . the old man," with his sinful deeds and carnal nature, and "put on the new man, . . . created in righteousness." This old man with his deeds is really the only known devil in human life, and it is only an evil sense of things; so it can be easily seen that Christian Science teaches that evil, or devil, is to be destroyed by each individual becoming spiritually-minded enough to recognize the ever-presence of God's law. This will enable us "to be pure in heart," in spite of the testimonies of our physical senses with their law of mortal experience. Thus to him who loves only God, good, above all earthly desires, and refuses to sin or express evil in his life,—to such a one, we say, evil becomes nothing, for God is found to be to him All-in-all. The great motive of all religious teaching is the exclusion of evil, or devil, from human life, if possible.
The revelation of Christian Science, therefore, comes forward with the proof that evil in a mortal is really but his evil mental sense of things, whether it be an ignorant or a wilful inclination entertained to violate the spiritual law contained in the thou-shalt-nots taught by Moses.
